Mountain House and MSG

OK, I just had my first mountain house entree (beef stroganoff). It seemed tasty at first, but it leaves this weird aftertaste on my tounge that reminds me of aspartame. (Like a cool mint feeling on the tip of my tounge thay wont go away.) I am assuming its the msg? I know i've eaten msg before in processed foods, but never had any food leave a noticable aftertaste like this. Does anyone else notice this taste with MHF?

Also, does anyone know if they add msg to their precooked rice? I sure hope not, because I just ordered a whole case of it. The company only list sodium content on their website, no mention of msg that I saw in the nutrition section, and their plain rice isn't even on the list. Crap I hope its not in the meat either, I got that too lol.

OK it looks like whatever I was tasting was not msg. I know because I called the company and they told me none of thier products contain msg any longer except the eggs. They said that will be phased out soon though and none of the product will. I should have asked when they stopped using msg to make sure my lot really is msg free, but didn't think to until after I hung up. This is really good news because I did some research on msg and its worse then I thought.

Does anyone know when they stopped using msg in their foods?

It has been many years since MH has had MSG in their non-egg entrees. So what you have there, unless it is ancient, is MSG-free.

If I had to guess what caused the odd taste - cause being dehydrated and stored properly it should be ok - would be the water.....

It's most likely the flavor enhancers in it that cause that feeling. Mountain House appears to have far, far higher amounts of flavor enhancers in it than your average processed food. Look at the ingredients, and you'll also often find several ingredients off of Goddess's list in the same product. Not everyone is sensitive to the stuff, and not everyone who is sensitive to the flavor enhancers is sensitive to every type. It can be pretty nasty stuff if you do react to it, however.

Unfortunately, high amounts of modified food starch give me migraines. I can handle the amount in normal junk food/grocery store food (not the frozen dinner type, however...big loss there! Lol!). Mountain House, on the other hand, will give me a monster of a migraine within 20 minutes of eating it. My guess is their food has insane amounts of the modified starches and other enhancers in it.

I've eaten MH products off and on since the early 70's. Never had a problem with any of it. Although the Beef Stew and the eggs are a bit bland tasting. Still, in a survival situation I will have no problem wolfing it down.

The Beef Stroganoff, Rice & Chicken and Pork Chops are all excellent. Everyone I know stocks a freezer with beef. I leave my freezer unplugged and stock MH because it requires no refrigeration.

If I need to dig into my mountain house, the MSG will be the least of my worries.
